The Single Fin Mingle 2026: New Zealand’s Celebration of Classic Surfboard Fins
The Single Fin Mingle 2026 in New Zealand celebrates traditional surfing and the timeless performance of classic surfboard fins.
The Single Fin Mingle 2026
The Single Fin Mingle is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most authentic surf gatherings, bringing together surfers who appreciate the elegance and simplicity of classic longboarding.
Held in New Zealand, the event focuses on traditional surfboards ridden with a single centre fin — the purest expression of longboard design and performance.
In an era dominated by thrusters and high-performance equipment, the Single Fin Mingle reminds surfers how beautifully simple surfing can be when powered by a well-designed surfboard fin.
The 2026 Single Fin Mingle in Sumner, Christchurch, continues to be a standout event for traditional surfing culture. This year's competition has seen a strong turnout of international and local surfers showcasing classic maneuvers on traditional single-fin logs.
Winners
The Mingle Masters division (a first for this event) was taken out by one of NZ’s foremost loggers Daryn McBride @daryn.mcbride.creative no stranger to the podium.
The Women’s final may have scored the best waves of entire event, with an extremely tight first & second (just 0.4) between top two, with France’s Zoe Grospiron @grospiron_zoe walking away with the victory. “This weekend feels unreal!!!😍thank you so much”
Women’s Results:
The 12th edition of The Mingle welcomed our biggest women’s field to date, with 48 of the world’s finest longboarders coming together in Sumner.
Saturday served up testing conditions, but as always, the ocean gave back on Sunday - glassy 1–2m lines rolling through for finals day, right when it mattered most.
The international depth of this year’s field was undeniable, with just one Kiwi, Tessa Randrup, pushing through to the semi-finals.
A beautifully close final - just 2 points separating 1st through 4th, and only 0.4 between the top two - a true reflection of the level and style on display.
Kia ora to all the wāhine who brought their wonderful surfing to the water this year. This is what The Mingle is all about.
Official placings:
1st Zoe Grospiron @grospiron_zoe (Biarritz, France)
2nd Malia Ilagan @maliailagan (California)
3rd Mia McMahon @miamcmahon_ (California)
4th Chloe Coleman @chloecolemaan (New York)
The Mens final, again stacked with the creme de la creme of surfing, was taken home by 2022 World Champion Harrison Roach @harrisonsan with ruler edge precision and timing, a class act the whole way home 🏁 Second place to Archy Bemrose @archy.bemrose “I’m still tripping over getting 2nd place at my first Mingle, especially finishing behind one of the modern-day longboarding goats”
Men’s Results:
Before the men had even hit the water, a late shift in the draw set the tone. With finals pushed to Sunday, current World Champion and 2025 SFM winner Kai Ellice-Flint @kaielliceflint was forced to withdraw— graciously gifting his spot to a young Hawaiian talent Ethan Speltz@kohoohikihamakua who hadn’t planned to compete.
Semi-final one delivered a major moment for the home crowd, with Sumner’s own Jack Tyro getting a win over former World Champion Harrison Roach — both surfers posting high scores to progress into the final. In semi-final two, Gold Coast’s Archy Bemrose was the real bolter of the event, earning his place in the final in his first Mingle appearance alongside Mount Maunganui’s Jordan Griffin — still the only two-time Men’s Mingle champion.
The final was a world-class showcase of traditional longboarding. Archy continued his incredible run, finishing second, ahead of local phenom Jack Tyro in third and Jordan Griffin in fourth. But it was Harrison Roach, in his first competition since claiming his 2022 world title, who reminded everyone why he is one of the best of this generation. With clean, head-high lines rolling through, Harrison opened up his full repertoire - delivering what was quite possibly some of the finest longboarding ever seen in a New Zealand contest. A perfect 10 in the scoreline left the rest of the field chasing combinations.
The Mingle, once again, providing a stage for world-class surfing in its purest form.

What is the Single Fin Mingle?
From the outset the vision has been clear: To develop a world class surfing event which brings together the very best surfers into the beautiful community and waves of the South Island, Aotearoa, New Zealand. To do this they have always had a simple formula - bringing great people together and having a great time. It is about celebrating our connections, the culture that we are part of and inviting others in. From traditional surfing displays, art shows, film screenings and musical performances, the SFM has always been about sharing the love.
The Single Fin Mingle is built around a single guiding rule:
Every board must be ridden with a single centre fin.
No side bites.
No thrusters.
No quad setups.
Just traditional boards paired with classic single fin surfboard fins.
The result is surfing that rewards:
• Smooth trim
• Long flowing lines
• Controlled turns
• Classic noseriding
Style and flow matter far more than aggression.
Where the Single Fin Mingle is Held
The Single Fin Mingle takes place in Sumner, New Zealand, where a passionate community of surfers continues to celebrate traditional surf craft.
Getting to Sumner from Christchurch city takes about 20 minutes by car.
New Zealand’s coastline provides the perfect backdrop for single fin surfing:

• Clean point and beach breaks
• Consistent swells from the Pacific and Southern Ocean
These waves allow surfers to demonstrate the full performance potential of classic surfboard fins.
Why Single Fin Surfing Still Matters
Before modern multi-fin setups took over, single fins defined surfboard performance.
Single fin boards encourage surfers to:
• Use rail engagement rather than quick pivots
• Generate speed through trim and positioning
• Draw long, flowing turns
• Surf with rhythm and control
With the right surfboard fins, a single fin setup creates unmatched glide and stability.
The Surfboard Fins Behind Single Fin Performance
When a board has only one fin, that fin becomes critically important.
A well-designed surfboard fin controls:
• Drive down the line
• Stability while trimming
• Turning radius
• Noseriding hold
The Single Fin Mingle is essentially a showcase of how different fin templates influence surfing style.
