The wide base provides increased drive through turns, making them ideal for high performance surfing. The center fin is smaller than the side fins with a little more rake for increased maneuverability and control.
Designed for radical, progressive surfing, the raked side fins produce exceptional speed and drive, while the smaller center fin offers quick release through turns. These fins have a high-quality machined finish, crafted from solid fiberglass. The wider base provides increased drive through turns, making them ideal for high performance surfing. Drive & Power
Solid fiberglass fins tend to deliver strong energy transfer. When you pump or carve, more of your force goes into forward drive rather than being lost in flex.
The AM2 template specifically has a wider base + raked (drawn-out) shape. That geometry favors drive + hold, especially through powerful, fast sections.
Because of that drive, they’re great for “speed control” — you get good acceleration, but they also help you manage that speed rather than becoming too loose.
Stability
With stiffer material, the fins feel more stable and predictable under load. This is really valuable in bigger surf or when making hard, committed turns.
The AM2’s flat foil (on the side fins) helps too — flat-foiled side fins break free more cleanly, giving controlled release rather than sudden slip.
Because the center fin is slightly smaller (in AM2), there’s more maneuverability, but you still retain a lot of control.
Durability
Solid fiberglass is more robust than plastic fins in terms of how they flex and respond under performance loads.
While solid fiberglass can still crack under very hard impact, many surfers find the performance-to-durability trade-off favorable. On surfing forums, users note that upgrading from plastic to fiberglass or stiffer fins noticeably improves control and responsiveness:
“ I can definitely feel a difference … stiffer larger fins in bigger surf … generally those are fiberglass.”
Another noted their plastic fins broke on a rock, but a fiberglass set would be more resilient in similar situations.
Performance Feel
The stiffness gives a “locked-in” feel. You know where the fin is holding, and you can push off it.
The AM2 template is pretty versatile for different types of aggressive surfing: carves, big turns, and drawing out lines down the face.
Because of material and foil, these fins often “spring” out of the turn in a controlled way, enabling both drive and release without wild, uncontrolled flicks.
Good for Powerful Conditions / Bigger Surfers
Given their size and stiffness, AM2 stiff fins suit surfers who either:
Weigh more and need more fin to drive their board.
Surf powerful waves and want a fin setup that gives solid hold and doesn’t chatter.
The Pro Glass construction is specifically designed for powerful surf: “stable feel … ideal for controlling speed in more powerful waves.”
